Upcoming Dates to Remember

At next Tuesday’s Beverly Hills City Council meeting study session (3/6 at 1:30 pm), policymakers will hear about the Bike Route Pilot Program and provide guidance to Transportation on the four selected routes. [Recap of the routes.] With public outreach & community meetings expected to follow through March, this is your chance to tell policymakers what you think of the options on the table. We wrote about the limitations of the feasibility study behind the Pilot in January, FYI. City Council agenda will be released Friday (email notification is available).

Upcoming on March 4th is the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition‘s Tour de Taste, a gastronomic tour of Culver City establishments and a ride down the Ballona Creek Bikeway. It’s a fundraiser for a great cause! While you’re perusing the LACBC site, take a moment to become a member – there are many advantages!

Next week on Thursday 3/8 the Planning Commission will make another site visit to the city’s Western Gateway. With an overlay zone planned there, Commissioners will no doubt continue their discussion about required setbacks. (Read the Gateway staff report.) Better Bike has been following the process since last Spring to ensure that active transportation is considered and included in the new zone (addressing the transportation-zoned land on the South Side of SM Blvd.). Read our letter to the Weekly and our letter to the Transportation Division about the zone. Then turn out to see how the Commissioners will square their endorsement of very narrow setbacks with the preservation of the option for bike lanes with boulevard reconstruction slated for 2014.

Weho-Benefit flyerOn March 15th join the West Hollywood Bicycle Coalition for Bikes – Ballads – Beers, a benefit for our newest Westside bike advocacy organization. The West Hollywood Bicycle Coalition emerged from that city’s Bike Task Force. With a bunch of money to spend on bike racks and lanes, we’ll see some great things from WeHo and this coalition for sure.

Later in March, the Planning Commission will likely finalize the overlay zone for the gateway in their March 22nd meeting. PUT THAT ON YOUR CALENDAR!

Happy riding!
